Accessing the Pores and Unlocking Open Metal Sites in a Rare-Earth Cluster-Based Metal–Organic Framework

In summary, This work has demonstrated, for the first time, that SALI is a viable approach to open pores and gain access to OMS in RE-cluster-based MOFs. We have used Y-CU-45 as a platform for these studies, as this MOF has unique 6-connected RE6-cluster nodes, with 6 coordinatively unsaturated sites that are capped by modulators from the synthesis of this MOF, partially blocking its pores. Seven different ligands were tested for SALI experiments, and it was observed that their intrinsic acidities are critical to promoting the displacement of the original capping ligands on the RE6-clusters. Interestingly, while all 6 original capping ligands can be removed, only 4 new ligands are incorporated on the RE6-clusters, making the MOF charge neutral after PSM. Moreover, substantial increases in BET surface areas were observed when incorporating small capping ligands, with the formate exchanged sample showing the highest surface area of 1980 m2/g. This value is very similar to that found for Zr-MOF-808, which is a structural analogue of Y-CU-45, demonstrating that RE6 cluster-based MOFs with low node connectivity are not only possible to synthesize but remain stable to activation and thus have significant promise for applications that take advantage of the OMS.
