Pliable LaCl3-Based Lithium Superionic Conductor

Halide solid state electrolytes (SSEs) have gained substantial attention due to their excellent ionic conductivity. However, their interfacial compatibility has been severely criticized. In this work, we synthesized a series of pliable LiCl-[LaCl3–CeCl3-(2-x)GaF3-xAlF3–TaCl5]0.2 SSEs with UCl3 structure to realize excellent cathode/anode interfacial compatibility while ensuring high ionic conductivity. They possess the ionic conductivity up to 1.54 mS cm–1, such excellent ionic conductivity originates mainly from the fast Li+ transport routes in the highly plastic amorphous matrix and rigid UCl3 crystal framework. Integrating it as an additive to conventional halide SSEs (e.g., Li3YCl6) can improve their Li-metal compatibility and provide solid–solid contact stability with the cathode. In addition, applying it as a LiCoO2 cathode additive can construct void-free, highly stable cold-pressed LiCoO2 particles at high voltages and realize high-speed Li+ migration inside the composite cathode. The all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) constructed on this basis have realized over 400 cycles at 0.2 C. This work provides a novel approach for the fabrication of halide SSEs with both high ionic conductivity and excellent interfacial compatibility and enables the development of high-performance ASSLBs.
