KUALA PILAH: Authorities have uncovered an illegal rare earth mine in a village in Seri Menanti near here.Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (pic) said authorities acted on a tip-off received by the Kuala Pilah District and Land Office on May 16.'A joint investigation on two lots of land showed equipment in the area used to mine rare earth elements.'The mining method used was in-situ leaching, which does not need a large area to carry out.'However, such a method requires a lot of digging and chemical processes,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 24).However, Aminuddin did not state who owned the property.Aminuddin said officers from the Minerals and Geoscience Department also collected samples from a retention pond for analysis. He said the authorities also seized gunny sacks believed to contain rare earth elements as well as equipment used.'We have cordoned off the area to ensure the mining doesn't continue and to stop further encroachment into the area. We believe the activity was carried out on a large scale,' he said.Aminuddin said action would be taken against wrongdoers as this was a serious offence.'It is my hope that the public will continue to report such suspicious activities to ensure state government revenue is not lost,' he added.
