来源:ACS PublicationsComplex, multicomponent liquids with hierarchical structure and phase transitions are encountered in many natural and industrial processes, including in chemical separations. One notable example is aggregation and organic phase splitting in liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) of metal ions. While these two phenomena that have long been closely associated, a mechanistic link between mesoscale structure and the capacity-limiting organic phase splitting remains elusive due to complexity of these systems. Here, we combine small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray photon correlation ...

来源:ACS PublicationsDeveloping high-performance mid-infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is crucial for modern laser technology. Here, three novel salt-inclusion Eu-based chalcogenides (SICs) were successfully synthesized via a guest-framework modulation strategy: [KEu4Cl][Ge3S10] (1), [Eu4Cl2][Ge3S9] (2), and [Eu7Cl2][Ge6Se18] (3). They exhibit diverse structures, where the [Ge2Se6]4– dimer violates Pauling’s third rule. 1–3 exhibit SHG responses of 0.3–0.9 × AGS and suitable bandgaps of 1.88–2.15 eV. Notably, 3 is the first Ge-containing SIC to demonstrate phase-matching behavior. T...

来源:ACS PublicationsRare-earth elements are strategic materials essential for renewable energy, electronics, and electric mobility. The growing demand emphasizes the need for a sustainable and efficient supply, considering environmental and economic aspects. Among their main applications are neodymium–iron–boron (Nd–Fe–B) permanent magnets, whose production chain presents significant environmental impacts─from mining to final manufacturing. This study assesses the life cycle of Nd–Fe–B magnets in the Brazilian context, following ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards. System modeling was performed i...

来源:ACS PublicationsThe escalating demand for reliable protection against high-fluence laser pulses across industrial, defense, and biomedical fields has driven intensive research into advanced optical limiting materials. A critical challenge remains the often-high operational threshold of such devices, which limits their sensitivity and practical deployment. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of a series of isostructural Ln3+-porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, Ln3+ = Gd, Tb, Er) that exhibit exceptional reverse saturable absorption (RSA). Remarkably, the erbium-based ...
